On the back of the ’10 new Bali’s’ initiative, Indonesia has seen improvements in its airports and hotels and finds itself on the radar for investment from international chains.
The ’10 new Bali’s’ initiative has put the spotlight on the Indonesian hospitality sector to improve and increase standards. This has caught the eye of international hotel chains and airlines to take advantage of the newly focussed tourism push.
Indonesian airports have improved facilities and services, and launched new sites to ease the demand as tourism numbers increase.
Denpasar’s Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport was crowned third World Best Airport in the category "airports with an annual passenger capacity of 15-25 million people in 2016", and Sultan Hasanuddin Airport was named as the Most Improved Airport in Asia-Pacific 2016 at the 27th Airport Council International Africa/World: Annual General Assembly Conference & Exhibition from Oct. 17 to 18, held in Mauritius. The awards were based on facilities including check points, security screening services, shopping facilities, restaurants and toilets.
Meanwhile, the Transportation Ministry has approved plans for the Marinda Airport in Raja Ampat to become an international airport. The runway will be extended from 1,200 meters to 2,500 meters, which will allow larger planes to land at Marinda.
In the hotel sector, interest from international chains is seeing new launches of exciting hotels set to change the landscape and introduce new alternatives for accommodation.
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) is introducing its luxury boutique hotel brand, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, to Asia, with the Kimpton Bali, opening in Indonesia in 2019. The chain prides itself on its bold, playful design, award-winning dining and amenities for the ultimate boutique hotel stay.
ARTHOTEL Indonesia, in September 2017, transformed itself into the ARTOTEL Group, specialising in hospitality, event management, and curated merchandise. Each hotel features artwork as an integral part of the design. The ARTOTEL Beach Club is a beachfront resort featuring contemporary design, international cuisine and beachside entertainment. Set to open before the end of 2017, the ARTOTEL Beach Club and ARTOTEL Haniman-Ubud will join the ARTHOTELs currently in operation in Surabaya, Jakarta, and Bali. ARTOTEL Haniman-Ubud is a hotel targeted to be Ubud’s lifestyle destination for accommodation and relaxed dining.
The budget hotel brand, Bobotel is also planning to increase rooms in major and secondary cities in Indonesia, including Kelapa Gading, Tanjung Pinang, Lombok, Bekasi, and Jakarta (Slipi). For the five-star clientele, boutique hotels Curated Collection has plans to open hotels in Canggu, Bali, and Lombok.
