There is no denying tourism drives business and the economy in Bali, but there have been calls recently for a greater distribution of the industry's benefits. Most of the island's hotels, facilities and employment are currently concentrated in the south, particularly in the regency of Badung.
New Governor Wayan Koster (Koster) and Vice Governor, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati (Cok Ace) were vocal on this platform during his election campaign, suggesting tourism in Bali needed to be reorganized for equity in all regencies and cities. Cok Ace argued the way the tourism industry has been managed, including price wars, was dangerous for everyone.
Many agree this approach is overdue.
Andrzej Barski from Harcourts Seven Stones told WILLIAMS MEDIA "the Bali experience is so much more than Badung and the southern part of the island. It seems that other areas have been left behind, particularly regarding infrastructure, and it's refreshing that the new administration is prepared to change the status quo, which in the long run will not only benefit more Balinese, but will also create greater opportunities for visitors to experience the magic Bali has to offer."
Vice Governor Ace explained the current state of tourism in Bali had a long way to go as there is imbalance in the ability of each region to manage tourism. Koster went further and suggested "Bali Tourism will be completely reorganized together with regents and mayors of Bali."
The new Administration believe standardization is the key. Koster told Kumparan in a recent interview the focus would be on a "Bali-based cultural-quality tourism. Tourism services, especially in hotels and restaurants will be standardized."
The standardization program will be carried out through something called Rancda Perda (Raperda) and will include the standardization of tourism services to certification of tour guides across the island with the intention of ending illegal tourism practices.
Koster-Ace hope their 'Grand Design for Tourism' initiative of one island, one management will change how people perceive Bali. "The development of tourism in Bali will be comprehensive and holistic, and this can be done through the concept of one governance," said Cok Ace.
